Minutes after the terrible attack in Las Vegas, where a man killed more than 50 people and injured hundreds, information began to flow on various internet portals and social networks.
Unfortunately part of that information was false, such as the profile of the assailant, who according to the ateway Pundit, was “a democrat who liked Rachel Maddow, MoveOn.org, and associated with the anti-Trump army.”
The Guardian said that Gateway Pundit, a blog dedicated to developing conspiracy theories, published that story without presenting any evidence.
The problem was because the blog took as a reference the Japanese portal 4chan, an alternative to Google News.
This is how Google and Facebook published links in their Top Stories that referred to this news, creating a chain of misinformation.
Later Business Insider confirmed that everything was born in 4chan and was false, but by then it was too late.
A Google spokesperson admitted to CNN that the search algorithm was “briefly popping up an inaccurate 4chan website,” adding that it was a “small number of queries.”
In a matter of hours, the story of 4chan was replaced algorithmically by relevant results. This should not have appeared for any query, and we will continue to work to make algorithmic improvements to prevent this from happening in the future. ”
But that was not all, because before the attacker was identified, Facebook promoted several dubious websites on its Crisis Response page , where it was claimed that it was a liberal named Geary Danley.
When the platform was questioned by the Fast Company technology portal, a Facebook spokesperson responded as follows: “Our Global Operations and Security Center discovered the publication and deleted it. However, its removal was delayed for a few minutes, which allowed us to take screenshots and circulate them online. We are working to solve the problem that allowed this to happen in the first place and we deeply regret the confusion that this caused.
However, several users reported that the news lasted for almost an hour.
It should be noted that both Facebook and Google have been dedicated in recent months to curb the false news on the Internet , for which they proposed to develop an algorithm that would put an end to the lies that are posted on their social networks.
