Estate of Fashion Executive Margot Rogoff & Others Auction

MANHATTAN, NY – 03-12-2019 (PRDistribution.com) — Previews at Showplace Antiques + Design Center

March 4th through March 17th

Auctions at Showplace is excited to present items from the Estate of fashion executive Margot Rogoff (American, 1935-2018) a former spokeswoman and director of public relations for Bloomingdale’s. Throughout her lifetime, Rogoff amassed an eclectic collection ranging from designer jewelry and accessories to modern art to Pre-Columbian antiquities.

Featured items include strong offerings in Asian art and decorative arts. An Indian Pala-type 6-Arm Shiva stele is carved from black basalt and depicts the figure seated on a lotus flower. Three elegant paintings signed Xu Beihong all depict horses while an 18th C. gouache on paper six panel folding screen illustrates a lush array of flora and fauna. Collectors will find two matching 19th century Chinese Zitan wood cabinets with meticulous relief carving and previously sold at Christies, two Southeast Asian Khmer sandstone figural sculptures with previous Sotheby’s labels, and also a selection of finely crafted Asian tables, stands, and chairs.

Fashion enthusiasts will be able to fill their closets with many high quality designer handbags, most notably an Hermès 35cm Birkin bag in Étain Togo leather and an Hermès “Herbag” that features a unique convertible ‘2 in 1’ design. Three Fendi bags include a tan leather “Peekaboo,” a vintage clutch with woven brown leather, and one with a red geometric design. Fans of Chanel will find several vintage bags with the company’s iconic quilted look along with a more contemporary “Bicycle Seat” hardcase bag, colloquially named for its resemblance to a derrière.

Complementing the bags is a fine assortment of designer jewelry including an Iradj Moini “Birds of Paradise” brooch and gold-tone ring set with colorful semi-precious stones, and an Hermes 18K white gold and diamonds lady’s wristwatch. These pieces go hand in hand with a variety of classic Chanel ‘Camellia’ flower brooches, brooches by Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent, and Christian LaCroix, and other jewelry by Elsa Peretti and Paloma Picasso for Tiffany, Brusca Dante, and Isabel Canova. A suite of Angela Cummings sterling silver jewelry includes a necklace, earrings and ring all heavily pierced to create a distinctly modern aesthetic. More traditional accessories include Hermes and Louis Vuitton silk scarves and a handsome assortment of designer shoes including examples by Christian Louboutin, Gucci and others. Fine garments include an orange Hermès gray cashmere coat and orange jacket with embroidery, a Chanel tweed jacket and olive green coat, a selection of fur coats including one sheared red by J. Mendel, and a variety of shirts and blouses by Michaele Vollbracht.

Vollbracht is also represented by a number of paintings and drawings including a series of pencil maquettes for fashion advertisements for Christian Dior, Elizabeth Arden, and Calvin Klein. A group of his acrylic paintings depict flowers, hearts and in one impressively large canvas a masqueraded fashion figure.

As always, the sale has a wonderful variety of fine silver, notably a Chinese Export three piece tea service with dragon motifs, a Japanese Meiji Period coiled dragon sculpture, and 85 pieces of Gorham “Chantilly” flatware and servingware. Exquisite jewelry comprises a La Nouvelle Bague 18K yellow gold and red enamel bangle twist-tension bracelet, a 18K gold bangle bracelet set with pave diamonds, faceted amethyst and other gems, a 14K yellow gold ring with diamonds and a cabochon cut coral, and others.

A Noe Canjura oil on canvas interior scene joins other lovely paintings including a George Henry Smillie coastal landscape, Charles Baskerville’s “Jamaica Hummingbird,” and a charming impressionistic landscape, “Rivages du Sud,” by Dominique Dorie. Fine furnishings include two Chesterfield tufted leather sofas, a Hollywood Regency mirrored console table, and a French Louis XV Rococo Manner Bureau Plat.

A collection of Mesoamerican carved wood Santos figures includes an intriguing bust of Christ reliquary, a standing Christ child holding a globe, and one depicting Saint Anthony accompanied by a pig. From the same geographic region comes a group of Pre-Columbian terracotta figures including examples from the Nayarit, Jalisco and Olmec cultures.

Other unique items include an African crouching Bambara carved wood antelope with headdress, a 19th century large carved wood monkey sculpture depicted holding a tray, a Jaeger LeCoultre “Rue De La Paix” street lamp clock, a Tabriz Persian wool and silk 6’ x 10’ carpet, and much more.
