The 51,000 odd prisoners housed in the New York State prisons will soon get to read e-books, email their family members and also listen to music. They will be handed a new tablet computer. This is really happy news for all the prisoners in New York State.
A deal has been struck between the New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision and JPay. This is the company that will provide the tablets to the prison inmates. JPay is a firm that offers technology and services for the imprisoned people to stay connected with their people outside the jail premises. The corrections department has said that there are about 51,000 prisons in the state prisons of New York.
The acting commissioner of the New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, Anthony J. Annucci, said that this is a great move. They are looking at offering leverage for the inmates to interact with their families and friends with the help of technology. The technology is used in the prisons to make it a safe place.
The inmates will get access to educational materials for free of cost through the tablets. They can file their grievances with the prison using the tablets. The NY state government has said that it will not be funding the inmates’ tablets. They are offered free as per the deal signed between JPay and the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
