The New York City government has said that the major oil companies in the region are responsible for the climate change. The government claims that the big oil companies are the major forces behind the threat to the environment. The five companies that have received flak from the NYC Government are Conoco-Phillips, BP, ExxonMobil, Chevron, and the Royal Dutch Shell. The government says that they have contributed about 11% of the greenhouse gases. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed soon.
The New York government has filed a lawsuit in New York’s Southern District. The lawsuit has asked the companies to bear the costs of pollution. The lawsuit said that the companies are fully aware of the impacts that their gases have on the climate. But, they are turning their face away from the truth.
The Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University director, Michael Burger, said that the lawsuit filed by the New York government is a very good move. He is happy that the lawsuit has moved beyond California. He wants it to spread to other territories. He felt that only if adequate pressure is applied to the companies will they rethink their strategy on climate change.
